Our Story

We are in 1958. During a conversation on the importance of education for the growth of the individual, a father is underlining the luck of his young son, student of form II at the Islamic Cultural College of Plaine Verte, while such opportunities are lacking for young girls of the region due to the absence of an educational institution for girls. Since then, that man, Late Mr. Sheik Adam Auladin who was a building contractor, embraced the idea of founding a college especially for girls in Plaine Verte. The Madad Ul Islam Society was a charitable institution founded in 1902, especially to bring assistance and support to the poor and the needful. Mr. Sheik Adam Auladin proposed the idea of setting up a college for girls to the members of the society. Comprising of some outstanding Muslim intellectuals, the members of the Society, instantly agreed.

After 6 years of hard work and perseverance by a group of determined souls, namely, Mr. Amjaud, Mr. Beehary, Mr. Dauhoo, Mr. Heerah and others and their appeal to parents through a door-to-door campaign, the college was erected and named Madad-Ul-Islam Girls’ College. It was in 1964. Around 30 pupils joined the college, directed by Mrs. Fazilah Ramjan-Domah, who accepted to sacrifice a promising career in the public sector in order to manage a new freshly emerged institution. As time went by, the building was expanded through the financial help offered by generous Arab donators, thanks to Mr. Hassen Heerah. The construction was patronised by Mr. Sheik Adam Auladin himself.

Under the guardianship of Mr. Hassen Heerah, the college provided diverse socio-cultural activities for all the social strata. It was a bustling place of activity that knew very little respite. Basic Islamic Studies for children were taught; both in the morning and after school hours. Courses in stenography, typing, sewing and cooking were offered to ladies who wished to upgrade their qualifications and aptitudes. Arabic language was also taught at night. During the weekends, the wooden partitions were removed between classes to welcome religious talks, wedding ceremonies and other social and cultural events, including prayers on Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Adha celebrations.

Mr. Hassen Heerah (1936-2021) was closely associated with the Madad-Ul-Islam Girls’ College as he was the manager since its opening, up to his last days. He inspired a lot of respect and was a towering figure; both physically and socially, in the region of Plaine Verte. Behind his stern look, was a soft-hearted and humble human being who was highly respected in society. He was the driving force behind all the academic achievements and social activities that were run at Madad-Ul-Islam Girls’ College. Always ready to assist those who knocked at his door for any kind of help, Mr. Hassen Heerah left no stone unturned in aid and support. May he be granted the highest rank in heaven by the Almighty. Ameen.

The Madad-Ul-Islam Girls’ College has produced many professionals who are now serving the country in different fields. They have strived throughout their educational journey, climbing up the ladder towards a brighter and better future. May the Almighty always allow the college to prosper in a fruitful way.
